4R Consistent, 4R Events, 4R Partners, Implement the 4Rs

It is increasingly apparent that today’s farmers live in a world where environmental concerns and increased food demand create challenges never seen before. To meet these challenges, agriculture industry leaders and collaborators, including the Canadian Fertilizer Institute (CFI) and the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI), are leading a sustainability and stewardship initiative that will utilize the 4R (Right Source @ Right Rate, Right Time, Right Place®) Nutrient Stewardship framework to reduce environmental impacts from the application of fertilizer and other crop nutrients– Farming 4R Future.

Farming 4R Future is a web-based collaboration approach that provides producers across Canada with science-based information and advice on how to use beneficial management practices (BMPs) under 4R Nutrient Stewardship. The Farming 4R Future project emphasizes collaboration with stakeholders in the agricultural industry across Canada by providing information on associated economic benefits of using BMPs for the application of fertilizer and other crop nutrients, while facilitating the collection of technical data (yields, inputs, documentation of practices, etc.) from farmers, as well as their perceptions concerning the challenges and opportunities encountered in the project.

The Farming 4R Climate project is the result of a $700,000 investment from the Canadian Agriculture Department with CFI under the Agricultural Greenhouse Gases Program (AGGP) to study greenhouse gas mitigation in fertilizer application using the 4Rs. This investment is providing agriculture sector members across Canada with an online forum to discuss the current challenges they face and make available tools and advice on how to use Beneficial Management Practices under 4R Nutrient Stewardship.

Protecting water, land and air are shared priorities of both citizens and farmers.  Farming 4R Watershed is part of the over-arching Farming 4R Future Strategy. It is a rural-urban partnership to protect water quality and support Ontario agriculture. The project objective is to assist the Grand River Conservation Authority with agricultural nutrient management practices adoption and advocacy by farmers in the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge region of Ontario. The results will assist in decreasing environmental impacts from nutrient application on farms related to surface and groundwater resources. The $100,000 project is funded by the Canadian Fertilizer Institute and the Ontario Centres of Excellence Social Innovation Program.
